(25/12/2019)  Christmas Wishes to all our members

It is time once again to wish all our members and friends a very happy Christmas and a peaceful and healthy New Year.

This brings to an end our 80th Anniversary year and what a year it has been. We started the year by planting an oak tree in the grounds of the Slieve Donard Hotel in memory of all our past members and our late president Sir William Hastings. Over 20 members attended the planting and we all enjoyed a beautiful afternoon tea afterwards.

The highlight of our year was our grand 80th Anniversary dinner with over 100 members and friends in attendance. The meal was superb and old friendships were renewed. Josephine Finnegan (nee Hughes) even travelled from England to be with us. Her first event in well over 40 years and of course we were delighted that Mr Rankin's two daughters also came along.

We again took part in the British Polio Fellowship games winning medals in Boccia, Kurling, Bowls and Dominoes.

A trip to the theatre and dinner afterwards was another highlight with over 30 members coming along.

The annual BBQ had over 60 there and it was a wonderful day.

The games at the Short Strand Community Centre continued every week and recently added to this was a craft club organised by Heather. It proved very popular and our Christmas trees are all bedecked with our handy work. Thanks Heather.

The monthly quiz continues and brings old friends together. Paddy Pill is our quizmaster and Ronnie our master of ceremonies.

Joe McVeigh again organised a bucket collection in Crossgar and a Night at the Races and both brought in much welcomed funds to help with our activities.

During the year one of our member Sylvia Hynes passed away and we think of her husband Raymond and children on this their first Christmas without her.

Today one of our members Joe McVeigh has reached the ripe old age of 70. What a Christmas present his mother got in 1949. A very happy birthday Joe and may you have many more.

If you are a member who does not come to any of our events why not make a New Year resolution to come to some event this year. I know you will enjoy it.
