(31/3/2011)  Death of Earl of Dunraven

One of Ireland's best known polio survivors the 7th Earl of Dunraven has died. The family seat was Adare Manor which is now a luxury hotel and golf resort in Co. Limerick.

The Earl born in 1939 was confined to a wheelchair since being struck with polio as a schoolboy.

In the early 80s the NIPF held its first conference on how survivors were coping with polio and the Earl and his wife attended. One of our members Pat Armstrong recalls how she offered to help the Earl with a drink and he simply introduced himself as Thady. She couldn't remember the name and said I'll just call you tiger and he laughed. He invited he to Adare Manor but she never took him up on his invitation. It was only afterwards that she was told he was an Earl. Pat said that he was a real gentleman and that his wife was stunningly beautiful.

The Earl was buried in Limerick yesterday and is survived by his wife Geraldine and daughter Ana.
